New York, NY--- On Tuesday, October 25th Johnson Edman Advertising executed and hosted a grand opening reception for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The Ny-Manhattan Business Center (NYCMBC) is one of a nationwide network of over 40 centers designed to stimulate job creation and the growth of minority businesses. It is the third business center opened by NCRC, which also manages the Houston and Washington, DC centers.

NYCMBC utilizes strategic partnerships and diverse professional backgrounds to improve minority-owned companies’ performance and profitability. At Tuesday’s grand opening, the center celebrated partnerships with the New York City Department of Small Business Services, the Empire State Development Corporation and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The center’s growing client list includes some of the most recognized small minority and women owned firms in the NY/NJ region that operates across a range of industries including advertising, construction, information technology, energy, staffing and retail. The annual revenue of MBDA clients range from $1 million to more than $9 million annually.

“We’re pleased that we can bring to New York what we’ve been successful in providing minority entrepreneurs in Houston and Washington, D.C.: the tools they need to access capital and to sustain business growth,” said John Taylor, President and CEO of the NCRC. Suzette Bather Director of MBDA said that, “she is confident that the center will be of outstanding service to the New York business community.”

Welcoming of DEAN E. BENNETT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MWBE NEW YORK STATE

NEW YORK, NY -- On Wednesday July 20, 2011, Johnson Edman Advertising planned a catered reception at the Metropolitan Pavilion to welcome Dean E. Bennett as the new Executive Director for the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC).

As Executive Director, Mr. Bennett overseas all procurement opportunities throughout New York State for new and current M/WBE companies that would like the chance to do business with the State. The key objectives for the ESDC is to encourage and assist vendors with the certification process that will open doors for minority and women owned businesses. This was made possible by the Executive Law Article 15-A proposed by Mark O’ Luck, Chief Executive Officer at Spectrum P.CC.

Prior to joining ESDC, Mr. Dean Bennett was the President/CEO of J.K. Bennett and Associates, Inc. (JKB), a New York-based management consulting firm that specializes in business development, supplier diversity management, government relations and securing procurement opportunities in the public and private sector.

Before establishing his firm, Mr. Bennett served as Vice President of Business Development and Supplier Diversity Initiatives at AVournou Construction Management Group (AVCMG) on Long Island, NY. At AVCMG, he was responsible for generating business opportunities and responding to government RFP/RFQs as well as privately funded projects.

Mr. Dean Bennett also served as Director of Equal Employment Opportunity and Deputy Director for the Office of Minority Affairs for Nassau County, where he oversaw M/WBE outreach and compliance for over 40 different government agencies. Within the scope of his responsibilities, Dean also served as the project manager of the first Disparity Study in the history.

Mr. Bennett has a Business Management/Economics degree from Hofstra University as well as a Masters of Science in Human Resources from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University.

Mr. Bennett resides in Baldwin, New York with his wife and two children.

Reception & Celebration in honor of Mark O’ Luck, the first minority and MBE Trustee in the New York Power Authority’s 79-year history.

New York, NY--- Over 130 individuals including government officials, New York State M/WBEs, and corporate leaders attended a reception on Thursday August 5, 2010 at the Metropolitan Pavilion to honor and celebrate Spectrum’s CEO Mark O’ Luck, who is the first minority to serve as a Trustee on the New York Power Authority Board.

Mark O’ Luck, Chief Executive Officer 

Mark O’ Luck is Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Personal Communications Corporation (“Spectrum”) a diversified business consulting firm he founded in 1994 that provides consulting services to large construction companies, large construction projects, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies. Prior to starting Spectrum, he was co-founder and President of SBMA, Inc., a small business consulting firm, and worked as a business consultant and senior management consultant in Corporate America.

In June 2009, Mr. O’ Luck was nominated by Governor David A. Paterson as a Trustee of the Power Authority of the State of New York, and was confirmed by New York State Senate to serve a two-year term beginning April 2010. Mr. O' Luck is the first minority and MBE Trustee in NYPA's 79-year history to serve on its board. Some of the other boards and capacities in which he has served include: Chairman Emeritus & Past Chairman of the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation; Vice Chairman, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce; Regent, Long Island College Hospital; Director, Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service; Director, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corp. and several others.

Mr. O' Luck has served on the NYS Public Service Commission Consumer Advisory Council; Con Edison Business Advisory Board; Independence Community Bank Business Advisory Board, and the Kings County Overall Economic Development Planning Committee.

In 2007, he served on the Spitzer Paterson M/WBE Transition Team Working Group. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award, the 2006 MBE Award of Excellence from the XIII Annual Competitive Edge Conference, the 2003 Brooklyn Economic Development Corp. Service Award, et al.

Mark O’ Luck is a beacon of hope for the MWBE businesses and works tirelessly on issues concerning theses MWBE businesses in the State in New York. He always put his money where his month is.

Project Title: Vernon Avenue Condominiums


Location: 119-125 Vernon Avenue between Tompkins and Marcy Ave

NEBHDCo in collaboration with NYC Housing Preservation and Development will purchase and redevelop four city-owned vacant lots in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Tompkins Park North. The project area is primarily by low density, low-rise residential uses with local retail and services scattered at various locations along most of the adjacent north/south avenues and Myrtle Avenue, which is one block north of the project site. Vernon Avenue Condominiums are accessible to the M, J, Z, G and L trains, additionally; there are transit bus services along Myrtle, Nostrand and Tompkins Avenues. The project will involve the new construction of two 4-story residential condominium buildings, totaling approximately 7,583 square feet in each building, having a total square footage of 15,166. Both buildings are being developed under the quality-housing program. 

The main entrances for each building face Vernon Avenue. Each building will have (8) eight residential condominium units totaling sixteen (16) units and consist of fourteen (14) two-bedrooms with an average square footage of 781 to 801 square feet and two (2) one-bedrooms with an average of 601 square feet; on-site laundry room and individual storage areas for each owner on the lower level of the building. NEBHDCO future goals are to promote a “Greener” Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods so they added approximately two-thousand and fifty-nine (2,059) square feet of landscaping will be provided; from the property line of each building’s entrance a decorative gate and passive landscaping will be installed along the frontage of the property as a buffer. 

The project’s prices for the homes will be affordable ranging from 96,000 for a one-bedroom to $374,000 for a two-bedroom. Project financing will be private unsubsidized financing utilizing a cross-subsidy approach to maintain affordability and a real estate tax abatement on the land as a result it will reduce the buyers/owners overall real estate tax . Construction of the Vernon Avenue Condominiums will begin this summer 2008 with a completion date project will be spring 2010.

The community views the project as a positive addition toward increasing homeownership and addressing the housing needs of middle-income households in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
